Collection of 20 letters to Holland's cousin, the Earl of Essex, assuring him repeatedly of his "humble and faithfull service" (" . . . no man hath a dearer and more affectionat hart to serve you then my selfe ... "), commending Essex for moving "in the true waye of religion," announcing with happiness the birth of a Prince of Wales (i.e. the future Charles II) and recording that his christening was performed "with no great seremonie," describing in some detail the disputed case and examination of a woman claiming to be pregnant (" ... shee caried her upe into her chamber, and there showed her brests that my cosen sayed were fulle of milke ..."), and referring to the King, the House of Lords, the death of the Lord President of the Marches and of the Dominion of Wales (i.e. William Compton, Earl of Northampton, d. 1630?), Lord Hertford, Lady Essex, the Earl of Carlisle (whose "malice" he deplores), and much else.

Henry Rich, first Earl of Holland (1590-1649) was both Royalist and Parliamentarian at various points during the English Civil Wars. Returning to the Royalist side in 1648, he rose for the King at Kingston but was defeated on July 7, 1648, and captured by the Parliamentary Army at St. Neots three days later. After a trial before the High Court of Justice, Holland was executed with the Duke of Hamilton and Lord Capel in New Palace Yard, Westminster on March 9, 1649. From the descripti...
